Michael Kusugak (Can)
Michael Kusugak grew up in the small village of Repulse Bay in Nunavut (formerly the North-West Territories). During his childhood, his family travelled by dog sled, living a traditional Inuit lifestyle. He is the author of seven books, including Northern Lights: The Soccer Trails, winner of the Ruth Schwartz Award; Hide and Seek; My Arctic 1, 2, 3; and Baseball Bats for Christmas; and was co-writer of A Promise Is a Promise (with Robert Munsch). He returns to WordFest with his latest book The Curse of the Shaman, an Inuit tale of adventure, perseverance and first-time love which tells of a young man's struggle to overcome a cranky shaman's misfired malediction.

The Curse of the Shaman is the story of two families on Marble Island, near Nunavut. After young Wolverine is born, his family travels to visit Paaliaq and his young wife and baby daughter, Breath. Qabluittuq, Wolverine's father, teases Paaliaq when his daughter would not stop crying. Paaliaq, a shaman, was feeling cranky and put a curse on Wolverine. Everyone forgot about the curse until Wolverine and Breath were all grown up…
