Maxine Trottier (Can)
Maxine Trottier is a prolific and award-winning writer of books for young readers; she moved to Windsor from Michigan, where she has Métis roots reaching back to Fort Detroit in the mid 18th century. Her many acclaimed works include The Tiny Kite of Eddie Wing - winner of the 1996 CLA Book of the Year for Children - and Claire's Gift, which won the 2000 Mr. Christie's Book Award. Maxine has even had a day named in her honour: "Maxine Trottier Day" was declared on May 25 by the Michigan State Legislature to commemorate her work as a writer and educator. She comes to WordFest with the post-war novel Three Songs for Courage.

Three Songs for Courage is a coming of age story set in Ontario in 1956. Gordon Westly and his friends are looking forward to a great summer break, cruising up and down town in The Chief (Gordon's car), playing pool, hanging out at the beach and pursuing first relationships. The summer takes a tragic turn when Gordon's brother dies, or as Gordon soon discovers, was murdered. Their carefree summer turns into a turbulent story of love and revenge.
