Red
Land Yellow River: A Story from the Cultural Revolution
is a story about Ange Zhang’s childhood in China. The story
profiles the rise of Chairman Mao’s communist government
and the “cultural revolution” that struck the country. The
cultural revolution was marked by the denunciation of all
things Western and a move away from the arts and education.
During this time, China was becoming increasing militarized
by the Red Army and the only ideologies that were promoted
were Mao Zedong’s. Zhang narrates the tale of the repercussions
of this regime on the lives of the Chinese, specifically,
the lives of the Zhang family. Read about the separation
of Ange’s family, his life in a work camp, the devastation
of China and his escape to a better life.
