Isobelle Carmody (Aus)
Began writing the first book of her now-famous Obernewtyn Chronicles when she was just fourteen years old. After completing a Bachelor of Arts degree and a journalism cadetship, she went on to publish a host of award-winning novels and garner widespread acclaim for her diverse talents as a consummate and much-loved storyteller. The Keeping Place is the fourth book to transport readers to the vividly authentic post-holocaust world of Obernewtyn. This forceful and carefully constructed tale, currently slated to be made into a feature film, proves once again why Carmody is one of Australias most highly regarded and prominent authors of fantasy fiction.

The Farseekers is the second book of the Obernewtyn series and continues on from where the first book, Obernewtyn ended. In the first book, the world is recovering from near total annihilation. Radiation has destroyed much of the land and the Council rules the land with an iron fist. Anyone outside the norm is considered a “misfit”, including those who have extraordinary mental abilities. Elspeth Gordie, an orphan with powers to read others minds, is deemed a misfit and is sent to a remote mountain institute called Obernewtyn. While there, Elspeth unravels a scheme where the powers in charge at Obernewtyn have to salvage old world technology in a bid for power, the same technology which caused such near annihilation. Elspeth, with the help of Rushton, the true keeper of Obernewtyn, thwarts the plans and takes over Obernewtyn. As The Farseekers opens, the Obernewtyn community is thriving, developing their special skills. However, with the fear the Council will stage a confrontation and knowledge there is a powerful Misfit in another part of the land, Elspeth and several misfits set out on an expedition to gather information about the Council and to find the Misfit. Many adventures result. In the end, the group finds a library of old world knowledge and with it, the powerful Misfit. Elspeth, however, has another fate in store, as she discovers she has been chosen to protect the world from old world weaponry, which could cause further destruction and contamination. The book ends with the sanctity of Obernewtyn maintained despite the Councils suspicions and Elspeths knowledge that more work lies in store in her mission to dismantle the old weapons.
