 The
Fall Of Gravity. An alcoholic father, Raoul Daggle,
and his eleven-year-old daughter, Juliette, search for
Joyel Daggle, Raoul’s wife and Juliette’s mother. She
has suddenly deserted them because of a threat from a
mysterious man in a three-piece brown suit. The novel
cuts between Raoul and Juliette’s journey to find Joyel
and Joyel’s continuing flight to escape her pursuer. Woven
amidst this narrative, Rooke intersperses the book with
reflective prose, almost jazz in nature. These passages
distill certain incidents and cause the reader to question
assumptions about narrative and character. All three characters
encounter the New Indian, who through his extraordinary
sideshow, Crazy Horse, provides a healing and redemptive
experience for the protagonists.
