| Pamela Paige
Porter is a poet and writer of children’s books. She will
be presenting Sky at this year’s Book Rapport;
a story set in Montana and southern Canada after the great
floods of 1964. Loosely based on the story of Georgia Salois
Phillips, a Metis living in Montana, Sky tells
the story of the devastation caused by the flood and the
impact it caused on farm land, families and interracial
relations. Pamela currently lives in British Columbia with
her family and their many rescued dogs, horses and cats. |

 Sky
is a story based on the life of Georgia Salois, a Cree Indian.
Georgia lived with her grandparents on a ranch. One day,
after heavy rain, the dam in Birch Creek broke, which lead
to the flooding of the whole town. Everybody affected by
the flood had to live in a nearby town’s high school gym.
The Salois family were happy to be safe, however, they as
well as the other Natives encountered discrimination. Luckily,
the family was able to move out of the gym and live with
a relative. Georgia found herself a friend; a young foal
named Sky. Georgia comes to rely on Sky as she and her family
face more adversity.
