Sky Running spends his days searching for buffalo, which this summer is scarce. His people, the Cree, have not seen buffalo all summer. They must find some so they can eat and dry meat for the winter. In the evenings, Grandmother shares stories about how the Creator gave them meat to get through the winter. The Creator created herds of buffalo hidden in the water beneath the earth and when they emerged the sound was like thunder rolling, hence they named the lake Sounding Lake. Grandmother tells them they need more powerful eyes to see the buffalo these days. Sky walks along Sounding Lake, praying to the Creator to bring them meat; when he looks down he sees a white stone. Picking it up he realizes it’s a white stone buffalo. That night Sky has a dream telling him where to find the buffalo. He tells his family and the people. The chief realizes Sky has dreamed of the Badlands, the home of the Siksika People who are their enemies. Sky’s mother and grandmother speak persuasively in favour of finding the buffalo. They travel south for four days, meeting no Siksika. Finally they come to a place with painted cliffs like Sky’s dream. From the cliff they see herds of buffalo. Sky is invited to ride with the hunters. The people rejoice, thanking the Creator for the gift of food.
