Joe and Cody, two young Cree brothers, are back in their summer home, near a beautiful lake in northern Manitoba. Snug in a cozy tent, Joe and Cody live with their Mama, their Papa and their little dog Ootsie, who’s almost a person. Although there are no other people around, Joe and Cody are never bored as they make up stories and games from the natural world around them - a stick, a rock, a baby loon. But the dragonflies are their favourites. Transforming them into kites by tying red thread from their mother’s sewing kit, Joe and Cody follow their magic kites, holding on to the string until sunset. Then in their dreams, instead of letting go, they are miraculously lifted by the dragonflies, soaring through the air until they awake in the morning.
