Dear Miss Mansfield London: Viking Penguin, 1990   Publications

Dear Miss Mansfield, a tribute to the author Katherine Mansfield, is a collection of short stories using Mansfield’s stories and themes as a catalyst. The centrepiece of the book is a story called Maata: a young man, Mahaki, he relentlessly searches for the truth around Mansfield’s relationship with a Maori woman named Maata. The rest of the book’s thirteen stories play with the Mansfield themes. Many reflect the Maori experience, though some are European in nature. His First Ball recounts a Maori man’s discomfort and surprise when he is invited to a ball at Government House. The Affectionate Kidnappers relates the tale of two Maori women who, because of their delight and enjoyment with a young white girl, are mistakenly accused of kidnapping. The Cicada introduces Aroha, a Maori child, who is rejected by her peers because she’s Maori. Throughout the book similar themes of class and discrimination are explored.
